Project Summary
Inimmune is a Montana based a clinical-stage biotech harnessing the immune system to discover and develop disease-modifying immunotherapies. Their clinical and pre-clinical pipeline targets allergies, infectious diseases, autoimmunity, and cancer. Inimmune approached me with a need to transform their website into a more effective, modern, and clean experience for Investors ahead of their Series B pitches. Their previous website was built by a vendor with no prior biotech or life science experience, without mobile responsiveness in mind, and was lacking in effective UX/UI design.
Together we optimized and transformed Inimmune’s website for both mobile and desktop to provide a more professional, functional, and clean experience for prospective investors and current users.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL
"We needed to update our website and produce materials for investors with a clean, modern, consistent look and feel. We were referred to Elissa by another biotech. After our initial meeting, I thought Elissa was someone I would work well with. I found her to be great to work with – she’s just really good at her job! She’s a great communicator, providing consistent and frequent updates on how work is going. She was very open to feedback, and we were able to effectively work together to find ways to blend our ideas on how we wanted to present our company and how Elissa could show those in the best way possible. Overall, I’m really impressed with how the website came together!"

HARNESSING IMMUNITY
WEB DESIGN PROCESS
The website work began after the site map was confirmed and the Inimmune had approved their content. While the client wrote their content for this one, the design could not commence until they were satisfied with the number of pages and had their content fully fleshed out as content drives design. Once these items were in order, I began with the desktop layouts for the top-level pages in the primary nav (e.g., Home, About, Pipeline, etc) in Figma.
Since branding was not a part of the scope for this project, careful considerations had to made regarding images (since none were made before). The approved imagery strikes the balance between the cool tones of the brand and clinical environments with meticulously edited warm-toned overlays. This approach works to align all of the images for a more cohesive, vibrant, and clean look and feel. This enabled buy-in for the top-level pages to be approved by the client. Upon their approval, I then moved forward with drafting the About and clinical program Pipeline subpages.
FIGMA FILE
When all was said and done the final, approved, and dev-ready Figma design file comprised of 19 responsive pages (not including all press releases and related media). Each desktop page featured a coordinating responsive mobile view.
Additional considerations were made for:

-
Having the ability to toggle open positions sections to show or hide them as needed
-
Modular Pipeline graphics for both desktop and mobile – to overcome frequently seen problems with pipeline graphics and responsiveness

-
Carousel sliders for News posts or other forms of content that made previous pages on the old site too long

-
The inclusion of a dedicated Publications & Posters page that will better enable their audiences to view them more effectively

-
A complete overhaul of the News page to be better categorized by Articles, Releases, and Events to enable users to better view and filter more effectively
NAVIGATION
For both desktop and mobile, overall navigation was enhanced by refining the page hierarchy, simplifying page names for clarity, and defining multi-level menu states (e.g., default, hover, and clicked).
The previous website lacked clinical program sub-pages in the navigation which made readily accessing them difficult for users. Instead, the previous site relied on a clickable pipeline pie chart graphic on the Home page or clickable text on the previous pipeline graphic in order to navigate to those pages which was not intuitive or readily clear to users.
The previous website also lacked clarity around the Investors and News pages, and instead lumped them into one subpage -- making them all the more difficult to find.
By clarifying and simplifying page names and nav structure the user now has greater ease of access to all pages. This enhances both the user’s experience and the increased likelihood of them viewing these various pages as well.
PIPELINE
The previous pipeline graphics were inconsistent from desktop to mobile and were also difficult to view on mobile as well. The new graphics are simplified to provide a more modern look and feel. This simplification in design also enables a modular approach to the desktop and mobile views to overcome common viewing problems with pipeline graphics across devices.
In industry, we typically see many organizations struggle to display their pipeline in an effective way on mobile and related smaller-scale devices. Some will try to keep the original horizontal orientation and enable the user to either scroll or zoom in on the graphic or rotate their phone to rotate the graphic – actions which typically aren’t intuitive to the user.
Some simply don’t bother making their pipeline mobile-friendly at all making it impossible for the user to readily view or read.
This approach mitigates all the difficulties in a simple and accessible way which improves the user’s experience. This enhances both the comprehension and utility of the graphic as well.
